Liverpool's China Town is the oldest in Europe. The arch was constructed in Shanghai, Liverpool's twin city and erected in 2000. It is the largest such arch outside China.

Guardian lions are traditionally placed at entrances in Chinese culture. The lions are usually depicted in pairs. When used as statuary the pair would consist of a male leaning his paw upon an embroidered ball (in imperial contexts, representing supremacy over the world ) and a female restraining a playful cub that is on its back (representing nurture ).

They are often carved in stone but these are in bronze.
