A TIME LINE
* 1920 Land purchased in the centre of Taree
by Dr A Muscio and Dr F Stokes.
* 1922 Mayo Private Hospital was opened
with eight beds.
* 1940 Bed numbers had increased to 21.
* 1976 Mayo was purchased by family companies
of Coldham, Taylor and Tjiong. A major
reconstruction was commenced.
* 1997 Mayo Private moved from the centre
of Taree to a new facility on this site.
* 2012 Healthe Care Australia purchased
Mayo Private and a further
redevelopment was completed.

The Beginning
In 1920 two visionary doctors, Dr A Muscio and Dr F Stokes,
purchased land in the centre of Taree to build a hospital.
Mayo Private Hospital opened in 1922 and was licensed for
eight patients.
The first Matron was Laura Nixon, pictured below with the
first nurse, Sister Alcock.

Building on the Past
This wall was built from bricks used in the 1922 construction of the original
Mayo Private Hospital and brought to the new Mayo site in 1997. Just as
this wall represents great respect of the hospital's history, Mayo Private is
testimony to the skill, dedication and loyal support of all who have worked
within its walls and all who have passed through its doors.
In the words of Joy Davey, who had a 51-year association with Mayo Private
and was the longest-serving Director of Nursing, it is "an honour and a
privilege" to serve this community.

To Serve Well Into the Future
Over the years the hospital grew and required a number of extensions. By the
1940s bed numbers had increased to 21. In 1976 the hospital was sold to the family
companies of Coldham, Taylor and Tjiong. A major construction was commenced
in 1977 and included a new wing, operating theatre and additional bed capacity.
By the mid-1980s the front entrance had been moved from Manning to Wynter
Street, wards were refurbished and new facilities built. Eventually Mayo Private
became 'landlocked' in the centre of Taree and could not expand further. Despite
some opposition - because of its distance from the town's centre - the Board
of Directors decided to purchase land and build the new hospital here. Dr John
Taylor assembled a group of shareholders and construction began. The new facility
was completed in 1997; double the size of the original hospital.
In July 2012, a private hospital group Healthe Care Australia purchased the hospital
and undertook a $10 million redevelopment.
