The labyrinth at Stoney Creek Battlefield Cemetery (Smith's Knoll) was added as part of the Smith’s Knoll Commemoration Project. Previously a commercial property with a small building, it was purchased in 2010 in order to expand the cemetery / park. Archaeological work on the newly acquired property revealed human remains (War of 1812 soldiers) and other artifacts. The building was subsequently removed, which allowed for the addition of the labyrinth.
A presentation given by the City of Hamilton Tourism & Culture Division on September 12, 2012 outlined four designs concepts for the labyrinth. (visit link)
The engraved paving stone at the center of a labyrinth reads:
In less than an hour on June 6th 1813, some 40 British and American soldiers died and over 300 were wounded, captured or missing at the Battle of Stoney Creek. The fiercest fighting took place within a few meters of this spot
