In 1929 when retailer Titche & Goettiger opened its landmark Dallas department store at 1900 Elm street downtown, they included a relief medallion of former US Vice President and diplomat George M. Dallas, the namesake of the city of Dallas.
The waymarked art relief is located over the main entrance to the store which opened in 1929 and closed in 1987 after Dillard's Department Stored bought the Titches locations and consolidated them.
In 1994 the landmark Titche-Goettinger Department Store building became the first historic downtown building to be renovated and repurposed as trendy downtown apartments. The 1900 Elm developers got the building listed on the US National Register of Historic Places in 19965, then used that listing to finance the reuse and renovation of the building with city and state historic preservation credits. Although controversial at the time, this formula has become the model for how to adapt and reuse Dallas' older downtown buildings for upscale apartments.
