The Town of Bancroft's Municipal Offices moved to the former railway station in 2016.
The station was originally built for the Central Ontario Railway, which opened a line to Bancroft in 1900. The Town of Bancroft purchased the building in 2016 from the local Chamber of Commerce.
The building was completely renovated in 2013 as part of an initiative by the local Chamber of Commerce. The mineral museum remains in the railway station and the Town also operates the visitor information centre there.
Bancroft was settled in the 1850s, incorporated as a village in 1904 and as a town in 1999 after it merged with neighbouring Dungannon Township.
While the population is a little less than 4,000 people, the town serves as a hub for the North Hastings region. As such it has a vibrant downtown, a hospital, high school, and regional offices for different government departments. It is has an active arts and theatre scene and is known as Canada's Mineral Capital due to the abundance of minerals and gemstones found in the region. The annual Bancroft Gemboree is testament to this.
