[EN] "The Rostock Council Archive reveals that the old river was already excavated in 1423 and fortified with bulwarks. Until 1903 it was the only and therefore most important shipping access from the Baltic Sea to the port of Rostock. As early as 1288 the Hanseatic city of Rostock took care of the maintenance of the port of Warnemünde. At that time, she signed a contract with the patrician Rötger Horn, who was supposed to keep the harbour entrance 12 feet deep for five years.
The first inhabitants of today's Warnemünde were Slavs. They were followed by Friesians and finally Lower Saxony, who founded the village of Warnemünde west of the old river in 1100 and settled there. The architectural style of the historic houses south of the railway station bridge has been preserved to this day.
Up to the 19th century, only the streets of Vörreeg (front row, today Am Strom) and Achterreeg (front row, today Alexandrinenstraße) existed. Both roads were built parallel to the old river.

Warnemünde's promenade is located on the west side of the Old Stream. It offers the flaneur towards the west pier and lighthouse many lovingly renovated captain's houses with shops and restaurants. From the open-air areas of the restaurants and cafés, you can relax during the season and watch fishing boats, excursion ships and yachts coming in and going out, or watch people strolling in boutiques and small shops on the Old River."
