In Boston's Dorchester neighborhood is the Cedar Grove Cemetery, which has this statue that is at a plot with the graves of Civil War soldiers.
Cedar Grove Cemetery is located near the southern boundary of Boston, next to an estuary of the Neponset River. The cemetery is bounded by Granite Avenue, Milton Street, Adams Street, and Butler Street, and by the pedestrian walkway Neponset Greenway.
The monument is located well within the cemetery. From the main entrance at Milton Street and Adams Street, go to the monument in a triangular island at an intersection, turn right, then follow that path to the next intersection.
The statue is a roughly life size and shows a Civil War soldier on a short pedestal. The figure is standing, leaning on his long rifle. The inscription on the pedestal is as follows:
"Benjamin Stone Jr.
Post 68 GAR
Gift of Thom. F. Temple"
A DOT News article is about the statue and continued memorial services at the location. Benjamin Stone, Jr. was a resident of Dorchester and volunteered in the Massachusetts 11th Massachusetts Regiment. In 1862, during the second Battle of Bull Run, he was mortally wounded and died in Washington, DC. He is buried in Uphams Corner. The local Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) organization took on his name and had the statue dedicated. The article also mentioned that there were 90 Dorchester residents who made the supreme sacrifice. At the time that Dorchester had a population of 2000, so 90 men is a lot.
