Lutegarda Guimarães nasceu em Novembro de 1879 em Vila Real de Santo António, distrito de Faro.
Ainda jovem, Lutegarda deixou o Algarve e passou a viver em Lisboa . Na capital portuguesa conheceu e veio a casar com o advogado madeirense João de Caires, um homem de cultura, que era escritor e fundador da Sociedade de Propaganda de Portugal , e que organizava em sua casa serões literários muito participados.
Logo no início do casamento sofreu a perda de uma filha (e provavelmente ainda de outro filho). Isto marcou-a profundamente e revelou-se na sua poesia , toda ela triste. A partir daí, decidiu dedicar-se a causas sociais, a mais conhecida das quais a visita a crianças doentes do Hospital de Dona Estefânia levando-lhes roupas, brinquedos e rebuçados.
Em 1895 nasceria o seu filho Álvaro Guimarães de Caires, que viria a ser médico , professor na Universidade de Sevilha , escritor e investigador.
Mulher atenta aos problemas e injustiças do seu tempo, a partir de 1905, começa a colaborar em jornais com artigos de cariz social. A sua primeira obra intitulou-se Glicínias e foi editada em 1910. Com a implantação da república em Portugal, o Ministro da Justiça de então, Diogo Leote , propôs à escritora, em 1911, que fizesse um estudo da situação dos presos, principalmente das mulheres detidas, numa época em que as prisões eram mistas. Lutegarda denunciou péssimas condições em que viviam os prisioneiros e os seus artigos conseguiram ter o efeito de abolir a máscara nas prisões, que era forçada em presos com determinadas penas mais duras, bem como a obrigatoriedade da pena de silêncio. Conseguiu ainda que as mulheres tivessem melhores condições higiénicas nas cadeias.
Durante dez anos, Lutegarda de Caires promoveu o evento denominado "Natal das Crianças dos Hospitais", e que hoje apenas se chama Natal dos Hospitais , uma festa dedicada a todos os enfermos, independentemente da idade, e que é exibido anualmente poucos dias antes da festa de Natal pela RTP.
Ativista, com os seus artigos publicados em diversos jornais como O Século , Diário de Notícias , A Capital , Brasil-Portugal , Ecos da Avenida e Correio da Manhã , luta pela igualdade de oportunidades e dignidade para as mulheres. Também se encontram algumas colaborações suas na revista Serões (1901-1911).
A 5 de Outubro de 1931 foi agraciada como Oficial da Ordem de Benemerência , pela sua dedicação às crianças e com a Ordem Militar de Santiago da Espada .
Lutegarda Guimarães faleceu em 1935.
A cidade de Vila Real de Santo António homenageou-a em 1937 concedendo-lhe lugar na toponímia local e erguendo, em 1966, um busto junto ao rio Guadiana.

Lutegarda Guimarães was born in November 1879 in Vila Real de Santo António, Faro district.
As a young woman, Lutegarda left the Algarve and moved to Lisbon . In the Portuguese capital she met and married the Madeiran lawyer João de Caires, a man of culture, who was a writer and founder of the Propaganda Society of Portugal , and who organized in his house very literary serials.
Early in the marriage she suffered the loss of a daughter (and probably still another child). This marked her deeply and revealed herself in her poetry, all of it sad. From there, she decided to dedicate herself to social causes, the best known of which was the visit to sick children at Dona Estefânia Hospital bringing them clothes, toys and sweets.
In 1895 her son Álvaro Guimarães de Caires was born, who was to become a doctor, professor at the University of Seville, writer and researcher.
Woman attentive to the problems and injustices of her time, from 1905 onwards, she began to collaborate in newspapers with social articles. His first work was entitled Wiccinias and was published in 1910. With the implantation of the republic in Portugal, then Minister of Justice, Diogo Leote , proposed to the writer, in 1911, to make a study of the situation of prisoners , especially of women detained, at a time when prisons were mixed. Lutegarda denounced the poor conditions in which the prisoners lived and their articles succeeded in having the effect of abolishing the mask in the prisons, which was forced on prisoners with certain harsher sentences, as well as the obligation of silence. It also ensured that women had better hygienic conditions in the chains.
For ten years, Lutegarda de Caires promoted the event called "Christmas of the Children of Hospitals", which today is called Christmas of the Hospitals, a festival dedicated to all the sick, regardless of age, and which is exhibited annually few days before the Christmas party by RTP.
Activist, with her articles published in several newspapers such as O Século, Diário de Notícias, A Capital, Brasil-Portugal, Echoes of the Avenue and Correio da Manhã, struggle for equal opportunities and dignity for women. There are also some collaborations of his in the magazine Serões (1901-1911).
On October 5, 1931, she was honored as an Officer of the Order of Benemerence, for her dedication to children and the Military Order of Santiago de la Espada.
Lutegarda Guimarães died in 1935.
The city of Vila Real de Santo António honored it in 1937 granting him place in the local toponymy and raising, in 1966, a bust next to the river Guadiana.
