With the foresight of Dr Richard Bowker, who realised in the mid 1800's the health risks of having burials so close to drinking water wells in the heart of Newcastle, as an alderman he was able to introduce legislation that no further burials would be allowed in the 'town limits'.
In 1881, 50 acres of land purchased from the Australian Agricultural Company (AAC), was opened as this Cemetery. It was well placed for river, train, and carriage/foot travel.
While now when you take a walk through you may wonder where more burials will occur, there are places, including a Columbarium Wall - for ashes, and above ground Crypts. With over 80,000 people buried here (some transferred from burials earlier in the 1800's, largely from Cottage Creek), there are 'only' 37,000 individual memorials to their memory.
