Largely made up of lapidary archaeological collections from the Gallo-Roman period, it was then installed in the Baptistery of Late Antiquity, which had already, since the 19th century, housed several ancient altars and steles. Since 2001, the Lapidary Museum has been awarded the Musée de France label by the Ministry of Culture.
In the process of reshuffling, the main section of the museum will cover, from the ancient period to the year 1000, the territory of Riez, former regional capital and seat of bishopric from the fifth century, territory which included, among others, all the municipalities of the current agglomeration community located on the left bank of the Durance. The second section, devoted to the art of gypserie, will have as a centerpiece the decor even the Renaissance staircase of the building.
