Banner version of the flag of the City of Venice. The banner was developed so that the Winged Lion would always be upright.
The flag originally appeared about 1500 years go, as the "Flag of St Mark", the patron Saint of Venice. It contains an image of the winged lion, symbol of Venice, with the open gospel of St Mark. On it is inscribed, "Pax tibi Marce Evangelista Meus" (May Peace Be With You Oh My Dear Evagengelist Mark)". There are 6 "fringes" representative of the 6 sestieri that make up the City of Venice. They are cut in such a way, that if they tatter or tear, they can easily be resewn or replaced, without any harm or damage coming to the winged lion and gospel.
This banner is draped from a building façade in the Campo Dei Frari, near the Basilica Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari.
