Fondée en 1121 et richement dotée par les comtes de Namur, Floreffe est la seconde abbaye de l’Ordre des prémontrés et la plus prospère en Namurois. Elle va connaître très vite un essor prodigieux et fondera d’autres abbayes en Belgique et à l’étranger. Foyer spirituel, intellectuel et artistique, elle va être le lieu de production d’œuvres d’art exceptionnelles, telle la Bible de Floreffe, manuscrit sur parchemin du 12e siècle illustré de miniatures. La communauté religieuse restera présente sur les lieux jusqu’à l’application des lois révolutionnaires et c’est une communauté scolaire qui lui succède en 1819 jusqu’à nos jours.

L’originalité de cette abbaye provient notamment de sa position stratégique sur un promontoire, dominant la vallée de la Sambre. L’ensemble primitif est entouré d’un mur de clôture. Il subsiste de cette époque une partie de l’église, la salle du chapitre, le cellier, l’infirmerie et le moulin-brasserie situé en contrebas.

Le complexe abbatial tel que nous le connaissons aujourd’hui date du 18e siècle. Une architecture classique caractérise les différents bâtiments construits en brique et calcaire, où l’ordonnance et la symétrie sont la règle. Unité et prestige se dégagent de cet ensemble, accentué par le bâtiment de la bibliothèque situé à l’aplomb de la colline et dominant le village.

L’église concentre de nombreux points d’intérêts. Consacrée au 12e siècle, elle va connaître des interventions successives : la construction d’un nouveau clocher au 16e siècle, l’agrandissement du chœur au 17e siècle avec les magnifiques stalles sculptées baroques, la façade de même inspiration reconstruite au début du 18e siècle et, enfin, la transformation intégrale de l’intérieur par l’architecte Laurent-Benoît Dewez pour y créer un décor néo-classique, à la fin du 18e siècle. Méritent une attention particulière également la galerie toscane et le colombier du 17e siècle ainsi que le moulin brasserie, qui est un rare témoin de l’architecture médiévale de type industriel de nos régions.

Le Service public de Wallonie, à travers son Département du patrimoine, a mené ces dernières années de nombreuses opérations sur l’ensemble des bâtiments. On compte des interventions majeures telles que la restauration de la magnifique charpente de l’église et de son clocher, à présent accessible au public grâce à une passerelle sécurisée, la restauration du colombier et de ses abord, conférant un charme indéniable au site. Des travaux ont également été réalisés visant l’adaptation du bâtiment scolaire aux normes actuelles de sécurité et des travaux de stabilité et d’entretien de cet ensemble remarquable.

Founded in 1121 and richly endowed by the Counts of Namur, Floreffe is the second abbey of the Premonstratensian Order and the most prosperous in Namur. She will know very quickly a prodigious rise and will found other abbeys in Belgium and abroad. Spiritual, intellectual and artistic home, it will be the place of production of exceptional works of art, such as the Floreffe Bible, manuscript on parchment of the 12th century illustrated with miniatures. The religious community will remain present on the spot until the application of the revolutionary laws and it is a school community which succeeds to him in 1819 until our days.

The originality of this abbey comes from its strategic position on a promontory overlooking the valley of the Sambre. The primitive ensemble is surrounded by a fence wall. There remains from this time part of the church, the chapter room, the cellar, the infirmary and the mill-brewery located below.

The abbey complex as we know it today dates from the 18th century. Classical architecture characterizes the various brick and limestone buildings where order and symmetry are the rule. Unity and prestige emerge from this ensemble, accentuated by the building of the library located directly above the hill and overlooking the village.

The church has many points of interest. Dedicated to the 12th century, it will undergo successive interventions: the construction of a new bell tower in the 16th century, the enlargement of the choir in the 17th century with the magnificent Baroque sculpted stalls, the facade of the same inspiration rebuilt in the early 18th century and finally, the integral transformation of the interior by the architect Laurent-Benoît Dewez to create a neoclassical decor at the end of the 18th century. Also worthy of note are the Tuscan gallery and the 17th century dovecote and the brewery mill, which is a rare example of industrial-type medieval architecture in our regions.

The Public Service of Wallonia, through its Heritage Department, has conducted in recent years many operations on all buildings. There are major interventions such as the restoration of the magnificent frame of the church and its bell tower, now accessible to the public through a secure gateway, the restoration of the dovecote and its approach, giving an undeniable charm to the site. Work has also been done to adapt the school building to current safety standards and the stability and maintenance of this remarkable building.
