Le chemin du front de mer suit la courbe de la baie de Saint-Nazaire, et vous amène dans le quartier de Sautron (prolongement du boulevard Albert 1er après le rond-point). La promenade s’élargit et deux kiosques très « design » vous accueillent pour prendre un verre, avec une vue splendide sur la baie et le pont de Saint-Nazaire dans le fond. Mais ce qui, pour beaucoup de promeneurs, fait le charme de cette portion du front de mer, c’est la série de pêcheries qu’on y découvre.

Jalousement entretenues pour la plupart, ces pêcheries s’animent lorsque leurs propriétaires se mettent à pêcher, selon la météo et le coefficient de marée. On peut alors voir en action les carrelets, ces grands filets carrés que l’on fait descendre et monter pour y récupérer une pêche… pas toujours miraculeuse ! Si vous voulez essayer par vous-même, rien de plus facile : vous pouvez louer une de ces pêcheries pour quelques heures, histoire d'apprendre le bon maniement du carrelet. Près de 200 pêcheries au carrelet sont recensées en Loire-Atlantique ; leurs propriétaire doivent payer une redevance annuelle pour occuper un emplacement dans le domaine public maritime.

En fait, si vous avez un peu l’impression de cheminer sur une digue, ce n’est pas par hasard : la promenade de Sautron a été créée au début du 20e siècle, lorsque la nouvelle entrée du port (l’écluse sud) fut construite. Les déblais de ce gigantesque chantier ont servi à créer ce cheminement, au détriment de la plage de Sautron, très fréquentée à l’époque. Aujourd’hui il reste une fine bande de sable en contre-bas, accessible à marée basse ; c’est là que sont solidement plantées les pêcheries.

The promenade widens and two kiosks very "design" welcome you for a drink, with a splendid view of the bay and the bridge of Saint-Nazaire in the background. But what for many walkers, is the charm of this portion of the waterfront, it is the series of fisheries that one discovers there.

Jealously maintained for the most part, these fisheries come to life when their owners start fishing, depending on the weather and the tidal coefficient. We can then see in action the squares, these large square nets that are made to come down and climb to get a peach ... not always miraculous! If you want to try for yourself, nothing easier: you can rent one of these fisheries for a few hours, just to learn the proper handling of the plaice. Nearly 200 plaice fisheries are recorded in Loire-Atlantique; their owners must pay an annual fee to occupy a location in the public maritime domain.

In fact, if you have the impression of walking on a dike, it is not by chance: the Sautron promenade was created in the early 20th century, when the new entrance to the port (the south lock) was built. The excavations of this gigantic construction site were used to create this path, to the detriment of the Sautron beach, very busy at the time. Today there is a thin strip of sand below, accessible at low tide; this is where the fisheries are firmly planted.
