Mrs. Newell is buried in historic Carson Cemetery, north of Ector, and she shares a modern, gray, granite upright headstone with her husband, James H. Newell. The family name, "Newell", is at the top set into a box in a lighter shade of gray, and it is flanked by flowers. Both Mr. and Mrs. Newell's important information is set into the same kinds of boxes, which read:

James H.
Apr. 15, 1859
Aug. 22, 1947

Harriet L.
Oct. 18, 1860
Oct. 20, 1960

---

Significant events in her lifetime include:

1860 - South Carolina secedes from the United States. President Buchanan does virtually nothing.
1870 - Reconstruction continues in the United States, and Georgia is the last of the former Confederate states to rejoin, in July.
1880 - Wabash, IN is the first city to have an electric streetlight.
1890 - A tormented genius, artist Vincent Van Gogh commits suicide.
1900 - Carrie Nation begins her anti-alcohol crusade by taking a hatchet to saloons.
1910 - Halley's Comet swings by again.
1920 - The Boston Red Sox trade Babe Ruth to the New York Yankees, and regret it for years.
1930 - Mohandas Gandhi and his followers begin their Salt March.
1940 - W.C. Fields calls Mae West "My Little Chickadee" in the movie of the same name.
1950 - The Korean "Conflict" begins.
1960 - The Civil Rights Act of 1960 becomes law, but we still have a long way to go.
