While the station that opened in February 1874 was initially called 'Crushers', it wasn't until 9 July 1877 that it was renamed "Katoomba". It has been a popular place to visit ever since, even if it does take almost two hours to get there from Central Station (a distance of less than 110 km).
While there had been a level-crossing to the east of the Station, it was replaced with a bridge over the rail line in 1986. Access to the Island Platform is via a long ramp from a tunnel that connects the Great Western Highway side, to the main shopping area of Katoomba. Wikipedia also gives the elevation of the Station as 1016 metres. An old fashioned sign on the Platform gives the height as 3,336 feet above sea level. [Some details from Wiki: Katoomba.]
