Initially called 'Crushers' when opened in 1874, it renamed to Katoomba in July 1877. It is one of the higher train stations of Australia at 1016 metres. It is an Island Platform Station, though there are three train lines that pass it (the third being a passing loop). Even though it takes about two hours to make the ~110 km trip from Central Station it is still a popular destination for tourists.
The current wooden station building was built in 1891, and is considered of heritage significance, as it is one of few surviving 'Standard Eddy' buildings designed by Commissioner Eddy. (
