The creation of Lake Blackwelder was a WPA project, and one that caused much grief to landowners who had to give up their land for the lake.

The lake cabins at Lake Blackwelder are located on the southeast side of the lake. The lake is situated approximately nine miles west of Stillwater.

There are currently eight cabins, constructed in 1937, which are still rented out. The cabins have been remodeled over the years, but still retain their rock walls and fireplaces. They are nestled together in a circular area on the south shore of the lake. Vinyl siding, and metal siding over the gabled roof, have been added.
