Barack Hussein Obama II, born August 4, 1961 in Honolulu (Hawaii), is a US statesman. He was the 44th President of the United States, in function from January 20, 2009 to January 20, 2017.
Son of a black Kenyan and a white American from Kansas of Irish stock, he was raised for several years in Indonesia. A graduate of Columbia University in New York and Harvard Law School, in 1990 he was the first African-American to preside over the prestigious Harvard Law Review. After working as a social worker in Chicago's southern neighborhoods during the 1980s and a civil law lawyer after graduating from Harvard, he taught constitutional law at the University of Chicago from 1992 to 2004.
He is the first black man to become president of the United States. His career has attracted a great deal of interest from voters and the media around the world. His presidency comes against a backdrop of war in Iraq, war in Afghanistan, crisis in the Middle East, a major recession in the US economy and global financial and economic crisis. On October 9, 2009, he received the Nobel Peace Prize."
