President Abraham Lincoln delivered the Gettysburg Address on November 19, 1863, at the dedication of the Soldiers’ National Cemetery in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, an early national cemetery for the Civil War dead. Starting in 1909, a date coinciding with the centennial of Lincoln’s birth, tablets with these famed words were first cast for installation in the country’s national cemeteries to assure that visitors never forget the honored dead and why they gave their lives.
”Montana State Veterans Cemetery is owned and operated by Montana Department of Military Affairs, and is located on the grounds of Fort Harrison.
History
Montana State Veterans Cemetery was established in 1985 when the Montana State Legislature authorized the first state veterans cemetery to be located on Fort Harrison, near Helena. In 1986, the United States Congress authorized the transfer of 62.5 acres of Federal land to the State of Montana for this new cemetery. The first burial was a World War I veteran on September 8, 1987.”
