On the night of January 18, 2015, Brock Allen Turner was caught in the act of rape of a drunk 22 year old Emily Doe behind a dumpster by the Kappa Alpha Fraternity. The case at first received regional attention, but the case blew up during the sentencing phase of the trail. Turner was sentenced to six months in Santa Clara County jail. A recall effort against the judge was started based on what was seen as a light and lenient sentence.

Since the crime, the area has been changed into an area with a fountain and benches
