The piece has both visual and auditory aspects. When you turn the crank, and images appears in the split. This is known as radial moiré, in which a fixed image appears when you rotate a disk pierced with slits over a pattern. Also cranking produces the sound that is supposed to sound like an owl. The plaque reads: "This sculpture is an homage to the Great Horned Owl (Bubo virginianus), a large owl that is native to California and Walnut Creek and is common throughout North America. Most active at night, the great horned owl is a natural predator, feeding primary on rodents. Owls have excellent eyesight and use stealth and camouflage to capture their prey after dark. They are rarely seen by most people. but are easily recognized by their distinctive 'hoo-hoo-hoo-oo' call. By calling attention to the Great Horned Owl. We hope to remind people of the importance of the night, of true darkness, as the natural habitat for all things nocturnal.
