A few geocaches brought my wife and I to Devils Garden. One geocache in particular,
, is located in the heart of this volcanic field and the coordinates for this waymark are taken from it.The geocache description is good to describe this natural area and tell us:
The area known as Devil's Garden, in Klamath County, Oregon is a geological prize. Located near the OCE Woods Line State Trail and US Forest Service Road #22. This rugged area can be accessed with a short hike from the parking coordinates. Or a longer hike on the trail.
Devil's Garden is the remnants of a hydroclastic volcano. Long weathered and eroded into low ridges and hard dunes. The "hydro" in hydroclastic refers to the interaction of the magma with water, and the "clastic" refers to the fact that, because of contact with water, the magma shattered as it erupted.
Thus, a hydroclastic volcano can be thought of as a cinder cone that formed during an eruption that had a strong interaction with water - either actually erupting into and building a cone within a body of water, such as a lake, or erupting through a very high water table that affected the magma as it came up through the volcano's throat.
