It is estimated that the Whirlpool at Niagara Falls formed about 4,200 years ago by the erosion of the Niagara Escarpment by the Niagara River. This erosion has formed a founded basin with a naturally counterclockwise flow of water. The basin varies in size from 1755' at its widest points to 1139' between the narrowest points between the north and south banks of the Niagara River. A natural bend in the Niagara River downstream from Niagara Falls forces water to form a counter-clockwise whirlpool that has grown larger over time due to erosion.
A major attraction is the Whirlpool Aero Car which takes passengers from the Canadian side over the whirlpool to a docking station on the American side. There passengers switch sides on the gondola so that everyone gets to view the both the rapids on the river and the whirlpool.
