This sign of history is located in Hamilton's Victoria Park. It tells of the Semmens, Ward and Evel Casket Company which was located a short distance from where the sign now stands. You can see the 13-story building, which stand on the site of the former casket factory, in the following image:

QUICK FACTS: Family Business Started in 1868 · Employed 100 · Demolished in 1972

In 1868, a family run business of builders known as Semmens and Sons located on the east side of Sophia Street (Stracthcona Avenue North), north of Florence Street. by the late 1870's, the company was producing undertakers supplies.

· 1885-1887 Semmens joined with James J. Evel and Alfred J. Ward to form Semmens, Ward and Evel Coffin Manufacturers, employing 50

· Fire in late 1890s resulted in a new three story brick factory, employing 100

· During World War I a caskets with handles costs around $17.00

· Satin and velvet casket lining scraps were used by local girls for doll clothes

By 1950, Semmens and Evel were sharing its space with Dominion Manufacturers, In 1972 all operations ceased and the site was cleared. In December 1979 the 13-story senior citizens apartment building known as Strathcona Garden opened its doors.
