The architectural highlight of the Max-Joseph-Platz is the National theater, Munich's grand opera house. The opera house was built between 1811-1818 by architect Karl von Fischer.

Just five years after its completion the opera house burned to the ground. It was rebuilt two years later by Leo von Klenze, who added the monumental neoclassical portico. The theater building was destroyed in 1943 during an allied air raid and rebuilt once again in 1958-1963.

In 1964, Georg Brenninger won the sculptor competition for the decoration of the west gable of the National Theater in Munich. This approached him with an almost insoluble problem. In the form, posture and plastic appearance, the figures not only had to adapt to the classical overall picture of theater construction, but also subordinate it - but they should also embody the spirit of our time. This task was probably the greatest challenge of his artistic career, because he entered new creative territory.

Among the musical instruments one can see a harp a kind of guitar and a flute.
