The public garden of Saint-Omer is a landscaped park of twenty hectares built in the late nineteenth century during the dismantling of the fortifications.
At the foot of the rampart, between two preserved bastions, in the former moats partially filled, was built a regular garden with lawn, boxwood and fountain. Further, in the middle of the "outside", these advanced fortifications was realized an English garden.
If these fortified works have lost their walls, the unevennesses have been preserved and the paths arranged between them. At the end of one of them, a stone waterfall with a body of water and a bridge were built.
The old fortified structure overlooking the regular garden was leveled and leveled to create a square with a kiosk (1900-1902) in the center and surrounded by rows of trees.
Furniture (lampposts, benches ...) completes this decor. Monuments with a statue were erected in memory of two Audomarois celebrities: Louis Martel (1813-1892), deputy, president of the Senate, minister, friend and right-hand man of Thiers and Charles Jonnart (1857-1927) deputy, minister, governor from Algeria.
A very beautiful arboretum composed of many local but also trans-continental species has about thirty remarkable trees from Asia or America.
Each spring and summer, flower beds and mosaiculture are used to beautify the garden.

Le jardin public de Saint-Omer est un parc paysager d’une vingtaine d’hectares aménagé à la fin du XIXème siècle lors du démantèlement des fortifications.
Au pied du rempart, entre deux bastions conservés, dans les anciennes douves en partie comblées, a été aménagé un jardin régulier avec boulingrin, buis taillés et fontaine. Plus avant, au milieu des « dehors », ces fortifications avancées a été réalisé un jardin à l’anglaise.
Si ces ouvrages fortifiés ont perdu leurs murs, les dénivellations ont été conservées et les chemins aménagés entre eux. A l’extrémité de l’un d’eux, une cascade en pierre avec un plan d’eau et un pont ont été bâtis.
L’ancien ouvrage fortifié surplombant le jardin régulier a été rasé et nivelé pour y aménager une place pourvue d’un kiosque (1900-1902) au centre et entourée de rangées d’arbres.
Du mobilier (lampadaires, bancs…) vient compléter ce décor. Des monuments avec statue ont été élevés à la mémoire de deux célébrités audomaroises : Louis Martel (1813-1892), député, président du Sénat, ministre, ami et bras droit de Thiers et Charles Jonnart (1857-1927) député, ministre, gouverneur d’Algérie.
Un très bel arboretum composé de nombreuses espèces locales mais aussi trans-continentales possède une trentaine d’arbres remarquables d’Asie ou d’Amérique.
Chaque printemps et chaque été des massifs de fleurs et des mosaïcultures différentes participent à l’embellissement du jardin.
