Pittsburgh - Oliver at Smithfield - Toynbee Tiles on Waymarking.com

I am happy to see the Toynbee tiles as a waymarking category, because I think they are cool oddities. There are three of them in Pittsburgh. This first waymark is right outside the Oliver Building, where I worked eight years for a law firm. I noticed this odd thing in the crosswalk, but never knew what it meant, or that there were more of them in other cities.

Along came geocaching, and I stumbled upon the Toynbee Tile locationless cache. Now I knew the whole story! How cool! BUT -- then I stopped short. If I logged a locationless find, the spot would be lost to all other geocachers. And I already knew about it. At this point, I decided NOT to log any of the Toynbee tiles, and that I did NOT like the format of locationless caches. I let someone else discover these odd tiles and gain enjoyment from their discovery.

But now, with Waymarking, ANYONE can come and see the Toynbee tiles that I know about as a daytime resident of downtown Pittsburgh. People from out of town can seek them out and log their visits here. People who have lived here all their life, but never noticed the tiles in their downtown travels, can write a log to say "wow! I never knew."
