Smith County's Spirit of Progress is a cherished symbol of the rich tradition of a time of classical and more formal architecture. Known as a "relief" sculpture because of its raised design, this panel was prominently displayed over the front door of the original Montgomery Ward & Co. building in 1930 on S. College Street in Tyler until the company moved to a new location in the Bergfeld Shopping Center area in 1959.
In 1962 the Alex Golenternek family moved the family business, Golenternek's Tyler House Furnishings, into the empty Montgomery Ward building and became resident caretakers of this beautiful piece. The Spirit of Progress lovingly guarded the front doors of Golenternek's until the building was demolished in 1980.
She was saved from demolition and was stored for years by the Smith County Historical Society who graciously donated this piece to Smith County citizens and visitors for their enjoyment. Because of their generousity the Spirit of Progress once again takes her rightful place as the elegant guardian of downtown Tyler.
