Das Denkmal, das allen, die für die Freiheit Österreichs gestorben sind, gewidmet ist, wurde 1946 bis 1948 auf Initiative und auf Kosten der französischen Besatzungsmacht nach Plänen von Jean Pascaud errichtet. Der mit weißem Marmor verkleidete Torbau wird von einem in Kupfer getriebenen Tiroler Adler nach einem Entwurf von Emmerich Kerle bekrönt. Die Gitter in den Toröffnungen zeigen kreuzförmig angeordnet die Wappen der neun Bundesländer.

The memorial, dedicated to all those who died for the freedom of Austria, was built between 1946 and 1948 at the initiative and at the expense of the French occupying forces. Designed by Jean Pascaud, the white marble-clad gatehouse is crowned by a Tyrolean copper eagle designed by Emmerich Kerle. The lattices in the door openings show the coat of arms of the nine federal states arranged in a cross.
