The U.S. Federal Courthouse in Springfield, MA was designed by the American Institute of Architects Gold Medal recipient Moshe Safdie. The $63 million dollar courthouse was in the planning stage for 7 years and took three years to complete. It opened in the summer of 2003.
The courthouse forms a spiraling crescent around two heritage trees, a copper beech and a linden tree, both were original to the site. The pedestrian entrance is a curved colonnaded leading to a grand stairway that leads to the five courtrooms on third level.
The façade is constructed of limestone and glass with a three-story circular colonnade. The contractor for the courthouse was the O'Connell Company of Holyoke, MA. The structure was among 18 projects nationwide to receive Design Excellence awards from the U.S. General Services Administration.
