Les usines Solvay, en 1895, viennent exploiter le sel pour produire du carbonate de soude entrant dans la fabrication du savon de Marseille. L’industrie est florissante et son développement nécessite beaucoup de main d’œuvre, surtout, au moment de la première guerre mondiale. Les Français sont au front et le travail, bien trop dur, ne convient pas aux femmes ni aux enfants.
Les Grecs sont arrivés entre les deux guerres et se sont installés par regroupement familial. Ils ont gardé leurs coutumes, leur religion tout en s’intégrant à la Camargue et y faisant souche.
L’église pour le culte orthodoxe est construite en 1952. La compagnie des Salins du Midi en fera don à la Métropole Grec-orthodoxe de France, en 2009.
L’église trouve asile aux confins de la commune, près des marais salants et dans un des baraquements de Faraman où étaient «parqués» les Indochinois !! Et ceci est une autre histoire peu glorieuse de la Provence et de la façon dont étaient traités ceux qui participaient, de gré ou de force, au développement économique de la région et à l’enrichissement de certains.
