The Battle of Gallipoli (Turkish = Çanakkale) took place on the peninsula on the northern bank of the Dardanelles in the Ottoman Empire, now Turkey, between February 17, 1915 and January 9, 1916. The battle had 300,000 British and French casualties and 250,000 casualties from the Ottoman Empire. It was the only Ottoman Empire victory of the war.
A 5.7' by 2.5' by 1.5' granite monument honoring the fallen soldiers interred in Gallipoli has been erected in the garden of the Canadian Museum of Immigration by the City of Halifax and the Turkish community in Halifax on May 21, 2012. The monument has images of the flags of Canada and Turkey as well as an image of the founder of Turkey, Mustafa Kemal Attaturk. The monument is inscribed:
LEST WE FORGET
A TRIBUTE TO THE FALLEN SOLDIERS IN GALLIPOLI
ÇANAKKALE FOR TURNING THE TRAGEDIES OF WAR
INTO FRIENDSHIP AMONG ALL THOSE NATIONS WHO
NEVER FORGET THE PAST, BUT EMBRACE
THE FUTURE FOR PEACE
"THOSE HEROES WHO SHED THEIR BLOOD
AND LOST THEIR LIVES...
YOU ARE NOW LYING IN THE SOIL OF A FRIENDLY COUNTRY.
THEREFORE, REST IN PEACE. THERE IS NO DIFFERENCE
BETWEEN THE JOHNNIES AND THE MEHMETS TO US WHERE
THEY LIE SIDE BY SIDE HERE IN THIS COUNTRY OF OURS...
YOU, THE MOTHERS WHO SENT THEIR SONS FROM
FAR AWAY COUNTRIES, WIPE AWAY YOUR TEARS,
YOUR SONS ARE NOW LYING IN OUR BOSOM AND ARE
IN PEACE. AFTER HAVING LOST THEIR LIVES ON THIS
LAND, THEY BECOME OUR SONS AS WELL."
MUSTAFA KEMAL ATTATURK
FIRST PRESIDENT OF THE REPUBLIC OF TURKEY
{signed} K. Attaturk
FROM HIS 1934 SPEECH ADDRESSED TO ALL MOTHERS
OF THE SOLDIERS INCLUDING CANADIANS
WHO DIED IN ÇANAKKALE
