In New Shoreham, near the intersection of Lakeside Drive and Old Center Road, is a historical sign about Fresh Pond.
The sign is located by a break in the stone fence near the intersection.
The marker is a stone that is rough on the sides and smooth where the text is. There appears to be considerable leaching of something - possibly salt - along the bottom and left side.
The text on the marker is as follows:
"[Block Island Historical Society Logo]
Fresh Pond
Elevation 78 ft.

Here Original Settlers
lived in Caves and Shelters.
Site of First Church 1772
Pastors
David Sprague, Thomas Dodge.
Deacons
Oliver Dodge. Trustrum Dodge.

Precious Spring.
Indian Burying Hill."
Fresh Pond, today, serves as an auxiliary reservoir for New Shoreham. I did not venture closer to the pond.
