This concrete arrow is located on a hill near Montague Airport. A short hike up the hill is required to visit. The arrow is in reasonably good condition for being over 90 years in age. I was even able to decipher the number '28' painted on the tail of the arrow (the fog's moisture helped it to stand out). The airway beacon still existed as recently as the the late 1970s based on a topography map (see below).
This concrete arrow (and non extant airway beacon) was made as part of the Contract Air Mail route awarded in September 15, 1926 from Seattle WA to San Diego CA and with interim stops in Portland OR; Medford OR; San Francisco CA; Fresno CA; Bakersfield CA; with a train connection from Sacramento CA. The Pacific Air Transport company begin flying the route July 1, 1927.
