From the guidebook on page 346, "On a bluff commanding land-locked Morro Bay are the summer cottages of MORRO, 12.4 m. (72 alt., 800 pop.), named for immense Morro (Sp., headland) Rock, sometimes called the "Gibraltar of the Pacific," which rises 576 feet above a shallow lagoon impounded by san dunes. From the rock, a great pile of tracheae (volcanic rock) covering 40 acres, thousands of tuns of building material have been blasted"
