From its creation in 1893, the location of the Brigham Young Monument has been a source of controversy. It was first displayed in front of the Utah building at the Chicago Exposition. After the Exposition it was moved to the Temple grounds in Salt Lake City. The first location was deemed inappropriate so the statue was relocated again on the grounds. Finally in 1897 it was moved to the middle of the intersection of Main Street and South Temple. A 25 square foot section of the busiest intersection in the city was deeded for its use. This was acceptable until the rise of automotive traffic made it a nuisance. Several proposals were made, unsuccessfully, for its removal. Over almost a hundred years the size of the base was expanded or reduced based on the current thinking in traffic engineering. Finally in 1993 the statue was moved 82 feet north to a position in the middle of Main Street but out of the intersection itself. Finally, in 1999, the city sold the entire one block length of Main Street to the LDS church eliminating all traffic concerns and giving the monument a permanent, unchallenged home.
