A mission to the Choctaw Indians was first established here in 1832, which later evolved into a school for Native American young girls and women. The school continued over the years, eventually under the control of the Choctaw Nation. Except for the years during the Civil War, the school operated until 1955.

Today the original 17 buildings are mostly gone or in disrepair. Six still remain and are vacant, some were demolished in 1980 and only the foundation and chimney is there. One building which has been restored currently houses a museum.

This water tower has been here a long, long time, although its age is unknown. It stands north of the large Pushmataha Hall. This is a cylindrical tank which is unpainted and rusted. It stands on four metal poles and has a visible metal pipe from the tank to the ground.
