The bronze plaque, on the western side of the Memorial Clock Tower in the square reads:
MAFEKING SQUARE
"Mafeking is a small township in Bechuanaland, RHodesia, South Africa. At the outbreak of war between the British colonists and their neighbours, the Dutch Boers, in 1899, the Boer Army laid siege to the town. British colonial forces in Mafeking were commanded by Colonel R.S.S. Baden-Powell whose brilliant defence had lasted 217 days shen the Boer commander withdrew his army on 17 May 1900. Sometime thereafter the Bright Town Centre was named Mafeking Square. The Alpine Observer carried frequent reports of the troops serving in the Boer War and it was proposed that a tree be planted in Ireland Street to honour them. The fate of the tree is not known. This Memorial Clock-tower was unveiled by Colonel Robert Law VD on 29 December 1929. It is a permanent memorial to the people of the Bright District who died in war."
Researched and composed by Nicholas J. Aloizos & Lauren Chalwell, Bright P12 College.
Unveiled by Jack F. Kett, President Bright RSL Sub-Branch, ANZAC Day, 25 April 2000
