This historic marker monument consisting of a bronze plaque affixed to a large pink granite boulder was erected by the Colonial Dames of America in 1923.
In 2017, the memorial is located near Congressman Trent Kelly's office at 431 West Main Street in downtown Tupelo.
The plaque reads as follows:
"In commemoration of
HERNANDO DE SOTO
and his men who spent the winter of
1540-1541
in Northeast Mississippi prior to his discovery of the Mississippi River
Erected by the Colonial Dames of America
in Mississippi 1923"
