In the 1930s, Hitler's regime allowed more than 6,000 - mostly non-capitalist Jews - to settle in the Netherlands. The intention: dissemination of anti-Semitism, because who was waiting for so many "poor slums"?
With the help of the Dutch government and especially Jewish philanthropic institutions from America, the Jewish Refugee Committee performed so badly for their maintenance.
During the war, the Support Committee established on the initiative of the churches for this refugee work. Despite the opposition of the Germans, this committee functioned until the end of 1942 and collected and distributed six million guilders.
