This steam-powered tractor engine contains a placard nearby that tells us its history and reads:

1912 Westinghouse Steam Engine

  • This engine was built by G. Westinghouse, the father of George Westinghouse, founder of the Westinghouse Company of present day.
  • It's unique design was decades ahead of its time. Note the upright boiler, the V-belt drive, a differential on the axle, and the attachment for horses to pull the engine.
  • It has a gear ration of 128:1. Its V-belt drive did not become an industry standard for another 50 years.
  • This engine was used to run a small saw mill and threshing machines ins the Grants Pass area of Southern Oregon until it was donated to Collier State Park in 1951.

This steam tractor is housed behind a fence and difficult to appreciate it in all its glory but I know at certain times of the summer, volunteers will take this tractor and other self-driven machines out onto the museum grounds temporarily.
