On the site of the current cathedral, nothing remains of the first Christian building, nor of that of the sixth century.
In the 11th century, the monument was burned down and rebuilt in the following century, under the impetus of Bishop Pierre de Confolens or perhaps Bishop Bernard, one of his successors. Henry II Plantagenet laid siege to Saintes in 1174, damaging the church.
It is likely restored after. From this time remains only the dome of the southern brace. During the 13th and 14th centuries, developments followed (chapels, sacristy, library, etc.).
At the end of the Hundred Years War, the bishops of Saintes (largely from the Rochechouart family) built a large building in flamboyant Gothic. They foresaw a three-ship hall-church (a bit like St. Peter's Cathedral in Poitiers).
The lack of funds forced the diocese to use the sale of indulgences to ensure the continuation of the project. Construction began, around 1450, by the imposing bell-tower porch (which however never received its arrow).
Then the plans changed (we do not know why): we opted for a traditional church with a large nave lined with two side aisles with side chapels, all counterbaked outside by flying buttresses.
In 1568, the Protestants ransacked the church (whose choir was not yet finished): the vaults of the nave and aisles collapsed. The reconstruction continued throughout the seventeenth century; nevertheless one chooses not to return to the earlier architecture: part of the chapels of the choir was abandoned; the nave, deprived of its initial height, received only a wooden frame.

À l'emplacement de la cathédrale actuelle, il ne reste rien du premier édifice chrétien, pas plus que de celui du VIe siècle.
Au XIe, le monument est incendié, puis reconstruit au cours du siècle suivant, sous l'impulsion de l'évêque Pierre de Confolens ou peut-être de l'évêque Bernard, l'un de ses successeurs. Henri II Plantagenêt met le siège à Saintes en 1174, endommageant l'église.
Elle est vraisemblablement restaurée après. De cette époque ne reste que la coupole du croisillon sud. Au cours des XIIIe et XIVe siècles, des aménagements suivirent (chapelles, sacristie, bibliothèque, etc.).
À la fin de la guerre de Cent Ans, les évêques de Saintes (en grande partie issus de la famille Rochechouart) firent construire un vaste édifice en gothique flamboyant. Ils prévoyaient une église-halle à trois vaisseaux (un peu comme la cathédrale Saint-Pierre de Poitiers).
Le manque de fonds obligea le diocèse à recourir à la vente d'indulgences pour assurer la suite du chantier. La construction commença, vers 1450, par l'imposant clocher-porche (qui ne reçut pourtant jamais sa flèche).
Puis les plans changèrent (sans que l'on sache pourquoi) : on opta pour une église traditionnelle avec une grande nef bordée de deux bas-côtés avec chapelles latérales, le tout contrebuté à l'extérieur par des arcs-boutants.
En 1568, les Protestants saccagèrent l'église (dont le chœur n'était pas encore terminé) : les voûtes de la nef et des bas-côtés s'effondrèrent. La reconstruction se prolongea pendant tout le XVIIe siècle ; néanmoins on choisit de ne pas revenir à l'architecture antérieure : une partie des chapelles du chœur fut abandonnée ; la nef, privée de sa hauteur initiale, ne reçut qu'une charpente en bois.
