This is an extraordinarily beautiful WPA addition to an existing school. Impossible to tell where the two met.

Wewoka High School is located at 1121 S. Okfuskee. In 1939, unskilled WPA workers constructed this addition that is virtually an exact copy of existing work. We could not be sure just where the old and the new met.
A bronze WPA shield is located to the left of the entrance at the northeast corner, which documents this work. The addition is actually larger than the original school building and consists of classrooms and an auditorium. The addition is a 2-story, L-shaped red brick structure measuring 100 x 176 feet. The roof is flat, with a stepped and concrete capped parapet. A limestone cornice wraps around the building about five feet below the roof line. The elaborate entry facing east on a one-story portion of the building, has a large limestone block surround with a stepped arch. There are four recessed entry doors. Above this entrance is engraved "19 AUDITORIUM 39". To the left of this entry are tall two-story limestone insets, and this is repeated at the rear in the high stage area of the auditorium. Tall window units on the side of the auditorium have brick infill where windows once were.
Along the facade, an exact duplicate of the entrance further to the north shows the extreme skill of the WPA workers, to be able to match this elaborate entrance. Two doors are recessed under a large limestone surround. Flanking this entrance are two five-sided brick columns which rise to above the roof line. At the top of each are limestone scrolled friezes, and a decorative limestone and brick parapet. The detail is extraordinary.
This is a beautiful school which will continued to be used for many years to come.
