Alison spent her formtitive years in Cornwall, and started to climb in 1960 while studying at the Slade School of Fine Arts in London, at weekends Climbing in North Wales. She then extended her climbing to the Alps and it soon became apparent that her temperament and stamina were well suited to the larger mountains. Alison married Janusz Onyszkiewicz a reknowned Polish mathematician, climber and caver, from Warsaw. Together they made many expeditions at great heights, including at 26,090 feet the Gasherbrum. Alison holds the British Ladies altitude record and was the first women to be elected to membership of the Alpine Club. After her death a Memorial Fund was instituted and in 1990 the entire assets were passed to the Mount Everest Foundation which has continued to award grants broadly in line with the original guidelines.
