The Depot Museum was originally built in 1854 as a depot for the Chicago, Burlington, and Quincy Railroad. It was located at Webster and VanBuren Streets across the Fox River from the current location. The depot served as a passenger depot until 1943 and served as a freight depot until 1966. It was vacant and deteriorating until it was moved October 12, 1973. The move was about 9 blocks and from one side of the river to the other. The building was renovated at that time and converted to house the Batavia Depot Museum.
