This site the doocot stands on was reputed to be Inchmurtach Bishop's Palace, the stones of which went into the building of the structure around 1600.
It was reroofed in the 1930s and was still used by pigeons around this time, but after falling into disrepair again it was restored by the St Andrews Preservation Society.
The structure is a rectangular 24 feet by 17 feet, of rubble with a gabled pantile roof. Ball finials adorn the apex of both gables.
It is situated off the A917 St Andrews to Crail road outside the village of Boarhills, in the middle of a green field close to the Kenly Water. It is easily spotted from a sharp bend in the road at the junction to Boarhills.
