"The knights of Saint John of Jerusalem owned the commandery of Saint John outside the city, which was a fortified building with battlements, ditches and drawbridges. 1312, the knights of St. John of Jerusalem took their followers in all their possessions and obligations, and at the time of the Revolution the hospital had no commanders, and the commandery was plundered in the course of the 19th century. former commandery which was of great importance in Auvergne in the 13th and 15th centuries, remains only the remains of the old chapel which still contains a burial house sheltering the tomb in which Artaud de Fay, the great prior of Auvergne, was buried. on the south face of the chapel, a fortified building with corner towers, probably forming the principal of the commandery, augmented by other buildings on which were found fenestrelles à mene and Gothic moldings.
