Elf Tage lang hielten im Dezember 1984 tausende Menschen die Stopfenreuther Au besetzt, um den Bau des Donaukraftwerks Hainburg zu verhindern. Trotz Kälte, Räumungsversuchen und brutalem Polizeieinsatz hielten sie durch, unterstützt von der Bevölkerung von Stopfenreuth und Hainburg sowie zehntausenden Menschen in ganz Österreich. Ohne diese Einsatzbereitschaft, die zu einem Umdenken in der ganzen Gesellschaft geführt hat, hätte es den Nationalpark Donau-Auen nie gegeben.

For eleven days in December 1984, thousands of people squatted the Stopfenreuther Au in order to prevent the construction of the Danube hydroelectric power plant Hainburg. Despite coldness, eviction attempts and brutal police action, they, supported by the population of Stopfenreuth and Hainburg as well as tens of thousands of people all over Austria, stick it out. Without this commitment, which has led to a rethinking of the whole society, the National Park of the Danube-Auen would never have existed.
