Lake Murray is a man-made lake, constructed by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) by damming up Fourche Maline and Anadarche Creeks. The resulting jagged shoreline provides excellent fishing and camping terrain. The lake covers 6,000 acres, and is part of the 12,500 acre park which surrounds it. Work on the park continued from 1933 to 1940, and the park was opened to the public in 1938.

The park is named after Governor William "Alfalfa Bill" Murray, who was influential is getting the federal funding for this park. The park contains 195 Contributing buildings, as well as 110 non-Contributing. It also contains numerous other structures and objects listed in the application.

Highway 77S makes a full loop of of the perimeter of the park, from the park entrance at the northwest corner, coming off Highway 70, around the park, to the northeast corner where it re-joins Highway 70. Along the way, the area provides 56 cabins, 9 RV campgrounds, 300 RV sites and unlimited tent camping facilities.

Entering the park from the west (Exit 24 on Interstate 35), along Scenic 77, you will pass the Lake Murray airport, the 18-hole golf course, and come to the 32 room Lodge and meeting hall. The State Park offers fishing, beaches, hiking trails, camp grounds, ATV/Motorcycle areas, golfing, air port, cabins and boating, not to mention some of the most beautiful scenery available.

The park was placed on the National Register in 2001.
