The lighthouse is made of latticed steel and was constructed in 1896 and powered by town gas with a 50 candle power burner.
The lighthouse keepers for both lighthouses used to live in cottages across the road, but since 1971 they are now fully automated and require no keepers.
The lighthouses are also used as striking marks for rocks whilst approaching the harbour..
